Apple has verified that Drake’s new album Views From the 6 will be released on April 29th through Apple Music exclusively.[1] Views From the 6 will include the song “One Dance” , which has already been seen on the Apple Music streaming platform.  It’s unknown how long Apple Music will retain sole distribution rights to the new album, we expect it’ll last anywhere from just a week to a month.  “Pop Style” will be included in the album too. Interestingly even though “Pop Style” is played by Drake, Kanye West and Jay Z together, Tidal, Jay Z’s own music streaming venture didn’t get the chance to release the album first.

This isn’t the first time a music streaming service such as Apple Music has secured exclusivity over a release, with Taylor Swift’s concert being released exclusively to the Apple despite her previous criticisms of the services[2]. It’s becoming increasingly common for competing streaming services to try and obtain rights to a release, some experts fear this could be at a detriment to the already dying music industry.
